The relationship between Pre-Raphaelite art and photography is an interesting one. Both art forms came into prominence in the 1840s and were interested in depicting natural landscapes as well as representing religious, literary and historical subjects in portraiture.

While the Pre-Raphaelite painters strove to replicate the detailed realism that photographs produced, photographers also sought to establish their work as fine art by imitating the styles and compositions of Pre-Raphaelite paintings.
